Last week I was fortunate enough to go see the Mount family again. A couple years ago I was lucky enough to photograph the daughter, Maya, at six months of age, 12 months of age and at 18 months. This time they had a new edition, William.
William is so cute and such a joy to photograph! He was happy the whole time and was perfectly happy to be moved around and even enjoyed the flashing lights. Of course, who wouldn’t have been enchanted by his big sister showing me her version of a unicorn butterfly princess. Quite frankly I had no idea they even existed until that moment! Playing with Maya, photographing William and then reading Maya a book completed my delightful day with the family. I am looking forward to seeing them all again in six months. Enjoy these photos…

<img style="cursor: pointer; We have been giving deserving winners makeovers and the ‘after’ fashion photo shoot to go with their new look. These women are amazing women and are very deserving of their new found looks! Every month we have had the before and after shots and write up printed, in full colour, in the Burnaby Leader. Here are some photos from a couple recent editions. They are really cute and we love them because they are so practical. You can eat it with your hand and you take what you want not what is handed to you.
But, we are also loving the mini cakes that have been popping up everywhere, too.
These are so cute and lots of fun because each guest can bring one home; they double as the favor. Of course, you have a few as display and as the ‘wedding cake’ for cutting but each guest gets one in an individually wrapped package to take home. Then everyone can indulge the catered desert that you paid for with dinner any way.
It’s a win-win. Your guests get to chose their desert, you don’t have to buy an expensive cake no-one will eat, all the guests love the mini cakes to take home, and you don’t have to pay for cutting or any favors no-one keeps anyway!
We found some beautiful mini cakes on-line from Kathy Dvorski Cakes (Ontario, Canada), Debbie Brown (Ashford, Middlesex, UK) and Peggy Porschen (London, UK). Many things have changed but not the basics of photography.
I have been asked to add some of my own photography to this blog. A few projects I have recently done to show what greysquare photographics does in a regular work day.
Alright then, here goes...

Rock n' Roll wedding!
This was a really fun wedding with the couple being from the band, Sugarblade. Everyone had a chance to visit with the bride and groom. Babies! Babies!

I love babies!

They seem to be everywhere these days! Every few years it seems that there is a trend to have babies. (This sounds callous but isn’t supposed to sound that way.) I love babies, after all.

I especially love to photograph babies. This can be quite difficult as a new parent and I usually say leave it to the professionals. But, not everyone can hire a photographer 24/7 until the boy/girl is 18 years old. So here, I will give you some pointers.

1) Get down to their level

You will find that most amateur baby pix are from an adult perspective. How boring. Get down to baby perspective. You will see what they see and you will ‘become one with baby’. At this level you will get the facial expressions you see but can’t capture. Also this is at a more personal level and this personality will show in your photos.

2) Come in closer

You can’t hurt your baby by coming in a little close. You want them to engage with the camera. A hand on your lens will not wreck it forever. Believe me when I say a little baby spittle on your lens is easily cleaned off. Take photos of details of your boy/girl: a finger, an eyebrow, or just an eye.

3) Black and White

All your other photos are in colour why not make these pictures classical by photographing in black and white? Black and white is more about people and their personalities. There is a time for colour, too, but maybe this isn’t it.

4) Direct flash is a no no

Try to use available, soft light. Natural light coming in a strategically placed window (or a window near a strategically placed baby) is perfect. A harsh direct light will not compliment the soft baby bum you are trying to capture.

5) Uncluttered backgrounds

You don’t need a backdrop to do nice portraits all you need is an uncluttered background. Why not take the baby photos on your bed surrounded by a white duvet? Or, even on your white/off white carpet? Just keep the background uncluttered and your photos will look professional. Your baby is the subject matter not the rowing machine in your living room.
I hope these tips help in your next baby photoshoot. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions for this or any other subject please write to me.lara photoerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10627515803038197605noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23694687.post-1145769655215330952006-04-22T21:58:00.000-07:002006-04-22T22:20:55.226-07:00My 'new' Best Friend...So I am finding my 'new' best friend is a bounced second flash. New is in quotations because it isn't new and I have used it before but not as much as recently.
I am using my bounce flash (into ceiling, wall, etc.) as my main light and having my 'on-camera' flash as my secondary light. The camera flash is just there to add highlights into the eyes. You need that or you get the 'dead eye' look. Very unappealing!
The bounce flash gives indirect lighting to the subject by having the light bounce throughout the room from the ceiling or off a wall. This lighting, because it is indirect, is quite soft and gives a glow as opposed to a direct flash look with a shadow behind the subject.
Now this bounce flash has a peanut slave attached to it so it knows when to 'pop'. A peanut slave is a device that makes a flash go off by detecting another flash going off and, therefore, goes off at the exact same time. I have no idea how this works, you would have to ask a technician of peanut slaves, not me. All I know is that it does work and this is a wonderful thing.
Because you have this bounced main light you would also need to be able to meter how much light is being admitted out of the flash...here you would need a light meter. Unless you are a flash genius, and I have seen them, they do exist!
Have fun trying this out and tell me of your past experiments that have worked for you (or haven't). I can help with all your questions.
Happy shooting!!!
- Lara
I was trying to sync my digital point-and-shoot camera with the bounce flash but it didn't work. I will have to experiment further with that. Good luck!lara photoerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10627515803038197605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23694687.post-1145474561568353872006-04-19T11:17:00.000-07:002006-04-19T12:22:44.800-07:00The Province articleMy company and I were recently featured in The Province Newspaper. This was very exciting because within the interview I was able to add some pointers for choosing a wedding photographer. As you can see with this blog I am really into helping people. The room divider from Heaven!
This exquisite masterpiece is custom made by Light Couture. The etched insert lights up, as you can tell, and can be a custom design of your choosing. The paint is car paint which is, therefore, very durable. Also, this divider is very safe to have around children and on any surface because it is quite heavy as a whole yet easy to move the individual links.
As I mentioned in the first post about this divider I lit this by bouncing light off the ceiling. It completely worked because the divider is very reflective (see car paint) and I wanted to get the highlights on the top edges of the divider. Of course, I had to cover myself (I am quite reflective) and did so with a black cloth hanging from the ceiling in front of me with a hole for my lens.
I had to do two exposures for each shot because the etched glass was about 1/2 as bright as my bounced lights (main light) but that was easy enough.
If you have any questions about the details of how I shot this feel free to comment and I can answer. I don't know how much people understand or know already and asking questions will help me in my further postings.
lara photoerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10627515803038197605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23694687.post-1142891135210258262006-03-20T13:19:00.000-08:002006-04-12T16:26:27.276-07:00Pop-and-Drag (photo lesson #2)My friend, Crisco, and I went to a gallery show of photos on Saturday. Amazing stuff! Photographs I have only seen in books and not in person. This is at the Vancouver Gallery of Photography until 31 March.
Photographers like: Dorothea Lange, Edward Steichen, Man Ray, Herb Ritz, you get the idea. What impressed me is that these are a private collection from a Vancouverite! (Thank you Yosef Wosk!) I never knew Vancouver actually liked to pay for art never mind photography! There may be hope for this city (and this photographer) yet.
After the gallery I was teaching her some photo skills and one skill she has been having difficulty learning is the pop-and-drag.
Pop-and-drag has been used for ages by photographers to still a moment but also show movement within the photograph. For example:
It is possible to do this with an automatic Point and Shoot camera (like we did).
1) You have to know your flash settings. Change your flash setting to the one with the flash symbol and a letter (or some other such symbol) beside it. This is the flash at night setting. When you take a photo on this setting the flash will go off right away but the shutter will stay open longer than normal.
2a) (This part takes practice.) Take a photo of the subject you want stopped in motion however after the flash goes off move the camera right away. You have to be very fast and know the time delay before and after the flash. It takes practice but looks funky!
2b) You can hold still and take a photo of a moving object. Make sure your flash goes off where you want the action stopped.
2c) Move the camera during the whole exposure. Make sure (as in 2b) your flash goes off where you want the action stopped.

Thank you to Crisco for taking this wonderful photo! It seems Crisco learned the lesson well! Well done!lara photoerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10627515803038197605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23694687.post-1142889430625154332006-03-20T13:15:00.000-08:002006-03-20T13:17:10.626-08:00Whistler 6 March 2006
So, Mom and I were skiing/snowboarding up at Whistler last weekend (March 6th). It was amazing because it was so sunny and beautiful. There was also some powder that others hadn't touched yet. Apperently the past week it had snowed 100cm! (I don't know what that is in American.)
I took some photos which showed how amazing the view is from 7th Heaven.
The nice thing about shooting something so beautiful is that it is so easy. All you need to worry about is composition and even then...lara photoerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10627515803038197605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23694687.post-1142889153919250592006-03-20T13:08:00.000-08:002006-03-20T14:10:32.480-08:00Shooting into the Sun (photo lesson #1)
Since I promised to teach on this Blog as well as share photos, her goes...
I used a digital Point & Shoot camera for my Whistler photos. It is easy to shoot into the sun when photographing the sky. There are two things you have to remember.
1) Move the camera around your scene a bit. After each change of position push the shutter down 1/2 way. You will see the image lighten and darken. The camera is adjusting the amount of light it will permit into the camera. Find the point as to where the exposure looks correct, keep your finger on the shutter button 1/2 way and re-adjust your composition. Take photo. Make sure after you find the proper exposure to not let go of the shutter button but to then reposition your composition and finish the job.
lara photoerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10627515803038197605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23694687.post-1142888923809793212006-03-20T13:05:00.000-08:002006-03-20T13:08:43.823-08:00

2) While taking a portrait into the sun is fun and inventive remember to always use a flash! They hired me to take a photo of their new room dividers they are making for this season. These dividers are beautiful! They are painted with car paint (i.e. very reflective) and have lit etched glass inserts (i.e. hard to light). So, I gave them a polaroid test (a pro polaroid is different from consumer polaroid) to see if they like the direction I am taking with the lighting. Low and behold, they love it! Only one test and everything is working out!
